Crazy Cannon

November 12, 2008

Telemark Skier coverFlylow athlete Charlie Cannon has been known to do crazy things: Launch cliffs backwards, juggle machetes while skiing, and dress up in gold chaines and short shorts. He recently appeared in Powderwhore’s new film, The Pact, and on the cover of Telemark Skier magazine. As a self-proclaimed Jugglemarker, he’s taken to throwing machetes on his on skis. We talked to Charlie about how exactly one does that.

What do you do for dryland training?

Charlie: I’ve been practicing juggling on different moving objects—skateboards, slacklines, rollerblades.  I also hit the weights early this year.

How hard is it to juggle on skis?

Charlie: It’s a lot harder than I thought. Mostly because on a skateboard or slackline, those are directional activities—you can go in straight line. But on skis, you have to make a turn and that changes your direction and momentum, so once you set the juggling pins in motion, they want to go straight. So when you try to turn, it throws it all off. You need counter rotation, to twist at the wrist, and lots of luck.

What exactly do you juggle?

Charlie: Knifes, machetes, and juggling pins. The machetes are the easiest because they are heavier. And with the speed from telemarking, the pins felt too light.

Have you trademarked the name Jugglemarking yet?

Charlie: I haven’t done that yet. Don’t beat me to it.
