A ski design example from Folsom.
We recently took a tour of a new custom ski manufacturer based in Boulder, Colorado. From the outside, Folsom Custom Skis looks like any old garage, a warehouse with a sliding metal door in a rundown lot in North Boulder. But inside, ski presses, rolls of topsheet logos, and two guys—Jordan Grano and Mike McCabe—work long hours grinding out handcrafted skis. Here’s how it works: A customer fills out a questionnaire on their website that asks questions like, What is your current home mountain? Have you had any injuries from skiing? Why type of terrain do you plan on skiing?, then the guys get to work creating that customer’s dream ski. “Basically our shop is filled with materials and we don’t start fashioning a ski until an order is placed,” Jordan says. “There are no skis on our shelves and we do not sell through retailers.”
